Installation with 13 Names

I gave this installation 13 titles. The most accurate title was “Pursuit of Joy in the Midst of Pragmatism and Escapism”. Much of my work is created in my response to fear: fear of the destruction of the biosphere, fear of the damage caused by a racist system, fear of an increasingly greedy and consumption-obsessed society, fear of concentration of power, etc. In this piece I decided to interrupt my furrowed brow and pursue joy. Although I am a person dedicated to integrating all forms of work and play, the "work" aspects of my life usually receive more attention than the "joyous" ones. Nonetheless I am confident that the pursuit of joy is essential to our collective and individual emancipation. ARC Gallery in Chicago, IL, 1998
