The
FBI COunter INTELigence PROgrams functioned between the years of 1956 and
1971. This was not the first or only covert action program of the FBI but
this was the first of its size and scope to be centrally directed.
COINTELPRO sought to destroy organizations and social movements
that questioned and sought to change the power structure of the U.S.
A few of the organization targeted for destruction:
American Indian Movement, Puerto Rican Independent Movement,
Students for a Democratic Society, the Communist Part, Socialist Workers
Party, New Left, Student
Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Nation of Islam, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the list goes on and on.
In the
FBI internal correspondence attached to the wall you can read some of
their tactics of infiltration, fraud, deception and assassination.
COINTELPRO’s most vicious attack was against the
Black Panther Party for Self Defense, which was the most prominent African
American political force during the late 60’s.
The BPP was formed in Oakland California and quickly grew chapters
all across the US. Their
initial action was to form LEGAL armed street patrols to deter rampant
brutality of the KKK and the police. The BPP soon developed “serve the
people” programs, including Free
Breakfast for Children Programs (serving 50,000 children nationally), the
People’s Free Food Program, and the Oakland Community School, which
served as a model for educational accomplishment in California. They also
fought against drug use. The Black Panthers helped forge a coalition
against US intervention abroad. Their
weekly paper, circulated to 100,000 readers, brought a radical and
anti-imperialist viewpoint to readers across the country. Several issues
of the paper are included in COINTELPRO Hell.
